Some information, such as meeting times and location are displayed on our website www.gvua.com. You should attend the February 3^rd & 11^th meetings at the Leroy American Legion  plus 3 of the other listed meetings. (March 25^th & 30^th meetings are mandatory) The more meetings you can make, the better it will be for learning the rules. You will be supplied the rule books.

To become a member you must be 18 years old. No umpire experience is necessary but it helps to know the game. High school ball games start at 4:15 or 4:30 PM during the week and usually 11:00 AM on Saturdays. You are required to be at the school 30 minutes prior to game time. During your first two seasons you will be umpiring the Modified & JV level games. By your third year you can move up to the Varsity level. We try to assign you to games with experienced umpires during your first year.

You are paid directly by the school you go to. You fill out a voucher prior to each game. You get it from and give it back to the Home Team’s Coach. The school will send you a check within 30 days.

This year’s pay rates are as follows:

Modified: $ 37.80  +  Mileage  ($0.32/mile round trip)

JV: $ 44.10 + Mileage

Varsity: $63.00 + Mileage

The above game fees are multiplied by 1.5 when you are assigned a game alone. This usually happens for Modified games. (Junior High Level)

Your costs are as follows:

1.)    Yearly Dues: $60.00 starting your second year (Waved your first year)

2.)    NYS Fingerprinting Charge: $120.00 (mandatory one time charge.)

      GVUA reimburses you $60.00 after your first season.

3.)    Uniform & Plate Gear: Can be purchased new or used or maybe you can find some of our members with extra gear they don’t use.

If you have umpired a baseball game before & enjoyed it, then you will enjoy umpiring at the High School level. In addition, our group umpires summer baseball games from the Little League level thru the Men’s 30+ Leagues (pay $40-$60/game, no mileage).
